Julia thought this would make the basis for a good picture book story, but couldn't think of anything to rhyme with 'tiger' – so she created her own monster whose. The Gruffalo book. If the first, then she should say so. The Gruffalo himself, meanwhile, is not even scary. Although admittedly, the pictures are quite good.

Still, clearly I am the only person in the world with these views. And maybe I am just jealous of its success. Everyone else seems to love The Gruffalo.

A stage version is opening again at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, on Wednesday, which is bound to sell out. I can only think that its inoffensive, bland and unassuming nature is the secret of its success.

Tell the story Using the pictures in the book or puppets encourage children to tell the story of the Gruffalo. You may find they start to use phrases from the story as they tell it.

Things to make and do Make finger puppets Make finger puppets for the animal characters in the story, either using the templates on the Gruffalo website or by making simpler puppets out of felt or paper stuck or sewn together and decorated with felt pens, wool. Use the puppets to tell the story together.


Make a mask Make a gruffalo mask. Or you could make a simpler mask using a paper plate and a stick, using crayons and coloured paper to add detail.
