The main purpose of the book is, of course, to explain discourse analysis theory and method, but I believe the examples chosen as illustrations are one of the most important aspects of any textbook. They can inspire students and open up paths for how they will use discourse analysis in the future.

Readers approaching this book from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis might find the conceptualization of discourse rather individualistic, and may miss discussion of orders of discourse on institutional and governmental levels. The framework is quite different, in fact, from CDA, even if some of the social goals are similar.

This, then, is very much a gentle introduction to discourse analysis, which illustrates the relationship between spoken language and social identity very clearly, but keeps social theory to a minimum.

Overall, I see this as a useful and accessible introduction to discourse analysis, but one which needs to be supplemented by books with more sophisticated social theory e.
