It is set in Switzerland in about , and is centered on one boys mistake. The story.

Lucien is considered this by his older sister Marie, who finds his laziness to be problematic. Armor-Piercing Slap : In the anime, Peguin gives one to Lucien in order to stop him from attempting suicide, when talking him out of it didn't work. Bait-and-Switch Credits : The European opening for the anime is mostly cheerful and upbeat, and the lyrics seem to promise a show about children playing happily together in the mountains.

The actual series is dramatic.

Advertisement: Book Dumb : Lucien isn't very good at academics. Chekhov's Gun : Lucien makes a wooden sculpture of Noah's ark as an apology gift for Dani, but it was thrown by Annette and later found by Dani. Annette gives it to Monsieur Nicholas as a substitute for Lucien's wooden horse carving that was supposed to be presented at the competition.

Chekhov's Gunman : Monsieur Peguin mentions he has two sons, one of whom is a doctor.

When Lucien finds out about a doctor who can heal broken bones like Dani's injury, he goes to find him despite the danger. The doctor turns out to be Peguin's son. He's just as nice as Annette is resentful. Not only is she the most understanding and rational person in the entire series, she actually knows how stupid Annette and Lucien are behaving toward each other and gently calls Annette out on her grudge.

Not only that, she's especially kind and understanding when Annette confesses she breaks Lucien's wooden horse carving. Not only that, she understands that Lucien didn't hurt Dani on purpose, unlike Annette, who believes he did.

Determinator : Lucien in the anime when he tries to find the doctor who can cure Dani's leg.

Watch episode 40 to see it in action. Disappeared Dad : Lucien's father died when Lucien was around two years old, leaving his debts to his family. Dub Name Change : Some in the anime. In the Spanish dub, Annette is called Ana. Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling : Lucien's older sister Marie is kind, hardworking, does her chores, works hard at her job, and is generally nice when she wants to be, whereas Lucien starts out lazy, rude, cowardly, mean-spirited, balks at the idea of helping his family and doing chores, and frequently makes bad decisions.

Marie often scolds him for his bad behavior, though this gets better after Lucien is wracked with guilt over what he did to Dani. Genki Girl : Annette is very cheerful and tomboyish, much to the chagrin of her mother and great aunt.

She becomes much less cheerful after her brother's accident. Happily Failed Suicide : In the anime, Lucien thinks about taking his own life. The old man in the woods, Peguin, catches him and convinces him not to go through with it, even if it involved an Armor-Piercing Slap.

Hollywood Genetics : In the anime, Annette and her brother are both blonde, even if they have a brown-haired father and their Missing Mom was a redhead. Ill Girl : Annette's mother was this, and because of Dani's birth putting a great strain on her body, she died. Missing Mom : Annette's mother dies after Dani is born due to having a weak constitution.

Must Make Amends : Lucien, at any cost, even if his attempts are constantly put down by Annette's hatred towards him. Never Live It Down : In-universe. Jun 23, Natalie Vellacott rated it really liked it Shelves: I love this Christian book that I read as a child and re-read recently. Annette decides that she will never forgive Lucien for hurting her brother Dani. And so she begins a revenge campaign involving many other people in their small community. But her hatred consumes her and she ends up hating herself for what she has become.

This is an account of the power of forgiveness even when it seems impossible. Recommended for children and teenagers. This book has 26 chapters and is the perfect Christmas book. My family read this out loud as every December. Starting on December first, my mother would read one chapter aloud to us every night. After we opened presents on Christmas day, we would lie around listening to the end of the story.

Even though my brothers and I knew the story inside and out, it's description of sin and forgiveness, and the loving grace of God was still beautiful every time. I can remember my mom starting to cry every This book has 26 chapters and is the perfect Christmas book. I can remember my mom starting to cry every time! She would have to pass the book to Dad who never managed to finish the chapter without at least a wobble in his voice. It's a fabulous book!

Jul 24, JD Sutter rated it it was amazing. This story was just as charming this time as when I first read it in school as a child! View 2 comments. Sep 25, Amy rated it really liked it Shelves: I wish this book was easier to come by. Although it's had some relatively recent printings "relative" meaning in the last years , I know it will never be a popular book. With it's decidedly Christian agenda, I'm sure it's far too preachy for the general public. At times, it was a bit sermon heavy for me, too, but really, the story was good enough that I could endure a bit of sermonizing.

As each character struggles to make right his actions, real growth takes place, and the healing power of the Savior's atonement is made manifest. I actually found myself applying things from the book to my own life. One of the most meaningful quotes for me was this: If you keep on you will find happiness in loving, whether you are loved back or not. View 1 comment. I first read this book as a child and wanted to re-read it as an adult to remind myself why it was so wonderful back then.

To be fair, as an adult reader and now a novelist, I can tell you its simple structure and straightforward message is woefully out of place in today's modern world of ambiguity and flawed anti-heroes.

That having been said, that I think is the charm of the book. It is a reminder of a world that was more innocent and simpler. The book believes redemption is better than reveng I first read this book as a child and wanted to re-read it as an adult to remind myself why it was so wonderful back then.

The book believes redemption is better than revenge, faith is to be cherished, not mocked and a budding and complex friendship between opposite gender adolescents can be stripped of any romantic overtones. The author breaks the fourth wall and delivers direct messages about faith-infused living that I had forgotten in the years of busyness that have come since childhood.

This book is simple, to be sure, but sometimes we make like too complicated and the reminder of simpler times and values is desperately needed. If you are buying it for your children to read, get the original version and make them work for it. They might learn new words in the process, which always is a good thing.

Feb 25, Brenda rated it really liked it. We read this as a family and all enjoyed it. My only serious complaint are the few spots they author teaches kids that God promises to always protect them and never let anything bad happen to them. That is totally unBiblical. It did provide a chance for us to stop the reading and talk about that issue, which is good. Apr 16, ryan z rated it really liked it. After I have read this book, I noticed the theme is the innocence of childhood.

They do not know about jealousness nor hatred.

When Revenge Melts into Treasures of the Snow

The author used the story of a young girl and a boy, Annette and Lucien, letting God Jesus in and allowing him to love everyone. Yes, it is a hard progress to forgive someone for their grave mistakes. But I believe that everyone should be forgiven at some point. Everyone had made mistakes and asked for forgiveness, it's a part of life.

Am citit cartea aceasta cand eram copil. M a miscat la fel de tare. Jan 09, PaperTigerMaddy rated it did not like it. I have strong memories of disliking this book as a child, largely due to its utterly vile heroine.

I spent the entire book with an almost uncontrollable desire to give Annette a massive slap for essentially doing all she can to ruin Lucien's life. Unfortunately, my hatred for her made it impossible for me to enjoy the book and so I fail to remember what merits if any it actually has.

Apr 17, Connie rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a great book for parents and children to read together with opportunity for discussion. It clearly shows that we are born inclined to sin.

I disagree with Grandma who, in her mostly wise, godly counsel, says that God promises always to protect children and never let anything bad happen to them. It is obvious in the story that this is not so. Thank you, several family members and most recently our Buffalo family, for sharing this story with me!

Dec 30, Nelleke Plouffe rated it really liked it. I read this aloud to my 9, 5, and 3-year-old boys. We all enjoyed it. A childhood classic re visited after my nephew read it and loved it.

I still loved it just as much as I did as a child. Jun 24, Rachel rated it it was amazing Shelves: When we want to illuminate a dark room, we do not try to chase away the darkness before letting in the light. We simply open the window, and the light comes in.

And when the light comes in, the darkness disappears. In the same way, we should not try to cast out the fear and anger in our hearts by sheer will and before we accept love and forgiveness. It is a beautiful and convincing story, and it means a great deal to me. Mar 06, Jennifer Trzeciak rated it it was amazing Shelves: We had some wonderful discussions as a family after we finished on what a life belonging to Christ looks like.

Such an excellent book, and I already can't wait to read this one again once my littlest kiddos get a bit older. Todella hieno ja koskettava tarina. Apr 03, Kathy rated it liked it. Second time I've read the book- this time with the boys.

The first time I read it, I loved it! This time I noticed the theology that is most emphasized is quite off. The aging grandmother repeatedly said "perfect love casts out fear" and then continued to discuss how God would never allow bad things or danger to happen to us when we love him.

I think this was spoken at least 5 times throughout the book. It brought about some good conversation with the boys about this theological error. Mar 26, Drennan rated it it was amazing. Our family loved this book!! I have had many teaching opportunities come up in the weeks following reading Treasures of the Snow where I was able to reference the book to teach a principle to my children.

Oct 10, Alicia rated it it was amazing Shelves: This may be a children's book but it hits on some hard truths, in the format of a very enjoyable and beautiful story set in Switzerland, which makes it even better. A beautiful book. I remembered it as being important to me as a child, and on revisiting it I see why.

Full of biblical truths that I have not seen in current fiction. Nov 04, ladydusk rated it really liked it Shelves: Sister recorded as audio-book for the children.
