Lighting and Rendering 7 The tutorials in this section relate to different lighting features that let you produce outstanding images and animations with 3ds Max.
You will learn how to use a variety of lighting methods, how to render still images and animation, and how to use three powerful features in mental ray for achieving global illumination.
Depth of field is a technique used to focus on a fixed point in a scene, called a focal plane. The area around the focal plane remains in focus, while the rest of the image is blurred. More blurring occurs when the aperture is wider set to a smaller f-stop. The next illustration shows the effect of depth of field in a scene. The focal plane is set short, so that the chair is in focus, leaving the background blurred.
Next Shutter Speed Control on page Shutter Speed Control A camera shutter is set to various speeds, each of which determine the length of time a film is exposed. Shutter mechanisms are commonly blinds-like components that open progressively.

Most often, they open up vertically, althought they can also open up horizontally. Some devices, especially motion-picture cameras, have rotating shutters.
Shutter Speed Control If the blades move slowly, a bigger slit opens and more light comes in. Fast-moving objects, like a car racing by, blur when shutter speed is set too low. If the blades move fast, the slit is smaller and less light travels through the lens. This is useful for fast-moving action or bright environments with sun, snow, and sand. In Figure A, shutter speed is fast and only a small amount of light travels through.
In Figure B, shutter speed is slow and more light travels through. Aperture and Shutter Speed Usually, you need to adjust both the shutter speed and aperture value to ensure that an optimum amount of light enters the camera.
In an exterior setting on a sunny day, for example, you would combine a faster shutter speed with a small aperture to compensate for the bright environment. If the day is cloudy, however, you might want to reduce the speed so that more light travels through the lens.
Otherwise, your shot will be underexposed and appear too dark. To compensate for the faster shutter speed, you would also need to open the aperture to let in more light.
The challenge is to strike an effective balance between shutter speed and aperture. A setting that works well in one situation might not necessarily work well in another. The Top viewport is outlined in yellow. The viewport display changes from wireframe to shaded. TIP You can also press F3 to switch a wireframe viewport to a shaded display.
To see what the camera sees, you need to change one of the viewports into a Camera viewport. You'll replace the Front viewport with a Camera viewport.

Because tools and controls are context-sensitive, activating a Camera viewport switches to camera-specific navigation controls. Unlike the Perspective viewport, Camera viewport changes are based on the movement of the camera. Next you'll render the scene.
Rendering the scene You've looked at the scene from many different angles, but the viewport tells only part of the story. To see the full effect of the scene settings, such as reflections and shadows, you need to render the viewport to an image.
The Render dialog appears. Make sure the Viewport field says Camera02, and then click Render. The rendered frame window appears, and the rendering takes place line-by-line from the top to the bottom of the image.
