Thanks for advice in advance For lack of other information I will assume that Russian will be your first foreign language and that you are planning to visit Russia for a couple of weeks rather than work or travel there for longer.

They're meant to be worked on over a much longer period anywhere from a few months to a year or two. If I were to stick to your tight schedule of T minus 2 weeks, I would start with this online course and try to finish at least the first seven lessons avg. Load the accompanying audio from the phrasebook and "Take off Once you're travelling, I would use any downtime to work through "Take off Use the phrasebook and its audio as a supplement if you get bored or you need to say something that you can't figure out how to formulate from your studies to that point.

The phrasebook and the book for "Take off in Russian" are small and should fit easily in your coat's or cargo pants' pockets or your carry-on bag. Well known and respected throughout Europe, the Assimil method provides short, fun lessons with natural, everyday dialogs. When you finish the course, you will be able to read newspapers and novels with the aid of a dictionary, carry on a conversation, handle transportation issues like renting a car or riding a bus or train and rent a hotel room or make a reservation in a restaurant.

If you would like to converse with your Russian-speaking in-laws, the Assimil course is ideal because the vocabulary pertains to everyday topics. And you learn this "with ease" and with a great touch of humor. The course is never boring and requires only 30 minutes per day.

This is excellent. This is something I advocate constantly.

I found this incredibly convenient as I usually have to create my own audio files for learning using tools like Audacity which is very time-consuming. Assimil has done this for me. I can then put those short expressions into a tool like Anki to make flashcards using the audio with images or text, or I can just play them on repeat.

Many of the situational dialogues in Assimil appear completely random and strange, and are not going to be useful to most people in most circumstances.

These are just a few examples of the kind of bizarre and unnecessary scenarios the book presents. A big part of language learning is searching for high-frequency expressions that you use a lot and are personally relevant.

These are situational expressions that I could find useful in many other scenarios. So I take those expressions, use the MP3 files provided and discard the rest of the dialogue perhaps until another time. Make sense?

The verdict: Is Assimil as great as people say it is? But the Assimil Method is not. Call this serendipity, call this whatever you want.If the method itself was designed to help you identify similar patterns and structures then that would make it utterly useless for languages like Arabic or Mandarin Chinese.

To make no mention of actually using the language with people and to claim that half an hour of book study a day is all you need to become a high level speaker is demonstrably false. For example, since grammar must be intuited in Pimsleur, I found the Polish case system difficult to grasp, not to mention their choice of verbs a Polish friend of mine found many of the dialogues strange. This is a soviet era course, for beginners. That's why I almost switched into assimil, but then I thought of what a good course it is and decided to make the effort!
