The dinosaur species that appear in the novel are very different from those seen in the film. In the novel, you have non-dinosaur pterosaurs, Procompsognathus, Apatosaurus, Microceratops, Othnelia, Styracosaurus, Euoplocephalus, Hypsilophodon and Maiasaura.

Some of these would eventually appear in later films in the series. The dinosaurs seen in the first film include Tyrannosaurus rex, Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Gallimimus, Dilophosaurus, Velociraptor and Triceratops. The movie wound up being a smash hit, earning over a billion dollars worldwide. Calls began for the inevitable sequels, both movie and book. Crichton was not a fan of sequels, however, and initially refused to write one.

He eventually relented, perhaps as a result of persuasion from Spielberg.

The novel The Lost World was published in September of The resulting film was The Lost World: Jurassic Park , released in May of In both works, the film and book versions of The Lost World , Ian Malcolm and some other people chosen to go with him travel to Isla Sorna Site B , where InGen had secretly been making more dinosaurs to supply the park on Isla Nublar from the first story. On this second island, dinosaurs are able to roam free, ostensibly doing whatever they want.

At one point, our heroes try to render aid to a baby T-Rex that has broken its leg but, while they are trying to doctor it, its parents attack their trailer and push it off a cliff. Any similarities between the book and film end there.

It would take a very long time to list all the changes and differences between the book and the film, but here are a few key details that set them apart and alter the story as told via their respective mediums: In the book there are two kids, Arby and Kelly.

Sarah Harding is not a paleontologist in the book, but rather, an animal behaviorist. There is a part with a motorcycle and velociraptors in the book that is missing from the movie.

This may or may not have possibly influenced a scene that appears in the first Jurassic World film. A subplot in the novel about disease wiping out the dinosaurs is not in the movie.

The book features a large horned theropod dinosaur called Carnotaurus that can change its color like a chameleon. This also may or may not have influenced some of the ideas in Jurassic World as well.

The Lost World

InGen are not the bad guys in the book: Instead, some geneticists from Biosyn, a rival genetics company, go to the island to steal dinosaur eggs.

Remember Dodgson, the guy who recruited Dennis Nedry to steal the embryos in the first film? He is the main antagonist of the second book. The fundamental difference between the novel and the film is the depth. The novel is a lot darker and more complex, dealing with a number of themes that the film never explores. These include: Ingen files for bankruptcy to escape the irresponsibility of its CEO and founder, leaving a mess behind because Isla Sorna was never disclosed to the Costa Rican government or USA government, meaning a potential hazard to society still existed.

I was being played with, and I didn't appreciate it. It was something like this: "So I got this completely figured out. The only way we can avoid getting eaten in the next twenty seconds is if we Oh, look! A leaf just fell in the breeze! It might have something to do with the environment they're in. Okay, if we factor in what they had for breakfast last year, and consider the death rate among dinos living 65 million years ago Oh, this makes sense.

They're all dying because An attacking dino! There's a dino in his way. He looks around for a tool to use to beat the beast to smithereens, getting more and more anxiously panicked, trying desperately to think of anything, when suddenly he sees And the dino roared and started charging. Personally, though, a combination of the latter two was able to fester and boil and brood quite effectively throughout the course of the novel.

I was completely put off by the writing style and the predictability of his archetypes -- I could easily make a matching quiz to list the names of characters from this book and its predecessor, and there's a direct correlation for each one, with the same role being filled by each and the same outcome happening to each.

Oh, and Malcomb gets hurt.

They stand in counterbalance to a famous mathematician and chaos theorist , Ian Malcolm , and a lawyer representing the investors, Donald Gennaro , who are pessimistic about the park's prospects. Malcolm, having been consulted before the park's creation, is especially emphatic in his prediction that the park will collapse, as it is an unsustainable simple structure bluntly forced upon a complex system with too many unpredictable variables, such as an uncontrollable population, attempting to contain animals with no real equivalent to extant animals with no predictable behavior patterns, and an untested computer system that continually fails to monitor and feed the population.

Countering Malcolm's dire predictions with youthful energy, Hammond groups the consultants with his grandchildren, Tim and Alexis "Lex" Murphy. While touring the park, Grant finds a Velociraptor eggshell, seemingly proving Malcolm's earlier assertion that the dinosaurs have somehow been breeding against the geneticists' design.

Meanwhile, the disgruntled chief programmer of Jurassic Park's controlling software, Dennis Nedry , attempts corporate espionage for Lewis Dodgson , a geneticist and agent of InGen's archrival, Biosyn. By activating a backdoor he wrote into the park's computer system, Nedry shuts down its security systems and steals frozen embryos for each of the park's fifteen species in an attempt to smuggle them to a contact waiting at an auxiliary dock at the eastern end of the park.

However, during a sudden tropical storm , he exits his vehicle to get his bearings and is killed by a Dilophosaurus.

Without Nedry to reactivate the park's security, the electrified fences remain off and all the dinosaurs escape. The park's adult Tyrannosaurus attacks the guests on tour, with a juvenile T. In the aftermath, Grant and the children become lost in the park. Malcolm is gravely injured during the incident, but is found by Gennaro and park game warden Robert Muldoon , spending the remainder of the novel slowly dying as — between lucid lectures and morphine-induced rants — he tries to help the others understand their predicament and survive.

Harding , takes care of Malcolm. They manage to temporarily get the park largely back in order, restoring the computer system by shutting down and restarting the power and resetting the system.Meanwhile, those bad guys over at Biosyn still want all the Dino tech for themselves, so they are in the distant background doing bad stuff.

Jurassic World: Maybe every few eons, some animal comes along that kills off the rest of the world, clears the deck, and lets evolution proceed to its next stage. The T. The kids were less annoying, but Arby was like a washed out copy of Tim from the first novel, so he and Kelly didn't really bring much to the table.
