CJ Roberts is an independent writer. She favors dark and erotic stories with taboo twists and her work has been called both .

The story is written with an intensity which will leave you numb; dreading and cursing the cruelty of the slave trainer and crying your heart out with, and for Livvie…..

Extreme betrayal plays a key role in this book. Livvie's love for her mother betrayed; and Caleb - all too aware of the ever present possibility of betrayal by his friend Rafiq, his thug helpers and even Livvie.

I was always seeking shelter in the people who hurt me the most. My mother. My father.

Like a battered dog begging for love from a malicious master. Her insight into human weaknesses and raw emotions is astonishing! Yet, in spite of all this horror and cruelty, there are some heartrendingly beautiful and touching moments in the story. I give this book a rating of 5 stars - and will be waiting with breathless anticipation for the story to continue in the next book.

Author CJ Roberts is definitely on her way up! As this book deals with the subject of pleasure slaves and kidnapping in a very real way, there are scenes and subject matter which might offend sensitive readers and thus is not suitable for readers below the age of eighteen. It contains scenes of severe cruelty, deviant sexual practices and violence which, although realistic, may offend sensitive readers. Ellen Fritz reviewed 4 days after purchase leighmortis reviewed on on Oct. Infact it is the most gripping book i have read in a long time, can't wait to read the second half!

Roberts' debut novel is a dark and sexy tale of the relationship between captive and captor. Well-written, with an alternating perspective, we get to peer inside of the minds of both Olivia, the young captive and Caleb, the tortured man who feels compelled to "train" her for sexual slavery. Note: I read this book as a beta, before publication, so the final, published version may differ slightly.

Sold into slavery as a young child, sexually abused and treated like a dog literally , he knows nothing but the dark underworld in which he grew up. He wants nothing more than vengeance upon the man who destroyed his life, and the unsuspecting, naive Olivia is the tool for that revenge. Olivia hasn't had such an easy time of it herself. She comes from a family that has its own share of darkness and she is trying to pull herself out of that darkness by going to school.

But when Caleb kidnaps her and takes her to Mexico to "train" her in how to be a pleasure slave, she fights back at first, all the while drawn to the enigmatic man who holds her captive.

Make no mistake about it - this is a dark universe Ms. Roberts has created. And yet, within that darkness lies light, or at least the possibility of it. Although the novel does not resolve completely the relationship between Olivia and Caleb, it poses some interesting questions which I look forward to seeing resolved in the planned sequel.

Roberts' writing is clean and engaging, and the shifting perspectives in the work are intriguing and not distracting to the reader. I enjoyed seeing what made Caleb tick the most, and how Olivia begins to get under his skin in a way that none of the other women he has trained before ever have. Seeing Olivia's growth from naive girl to a woman with a sense of her fate was also an appealing progression. Erotic, yes, but with an appealing darkness that will make you shiver at times and look for the light.

Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet)

This is truer of "Captive" than it has been in quite a long time for me in terms of novels by contemporary writers. The author's descriptive talents do an expert job of establishing bleakness, not just of the situations and physical surroundings, but also that which lies at the cores of captive and abductor alike.

Characters' grapples with damaging pasts and torments psychological and physical are grounded in gritty realism that made this one hard to put down. A definite winner that will doubtless incite me to frequent re-reads, and has earned the author a new lifelong fan. Looking forward to more from CJ Roberts. Cris Caldwell reviewed on on Oct.

This book was hard to read but worth it. I was emotional raw after reading this.

CJ Roberts has found a way to touch on something that many people would shy away from and turned it into a beautiful story and I admire the courage it took to write it reviewed 28 days after purchase. Hope Phillips reviewed on on Sep. It was an excellent sequel to the first book! I'm sad there's not a third book! I highly recommend both books to anyone who is interested.

Holly Leffler reviewed on on Sep. I am not going to write a review the story for two reasons, first, there are a lot of wonderful reviews out there and for as wonderful as they are you really need to actually meet these people to even come close to understanding the amazing-ness of these characters. And second, because since the story encompasses two books and I am so in love with this story I am afraid I would ramble and give away some important spoiler and it would break my heart to take any of the awesome of experience of these books away from the reader!

So I am going to leave you with a few of my favorite lines in this book and I am going to say that if you don't mind your emotional love story a bit gritty and dark at times go get these books, I can honestly say you won't be disappointed, in fact I can pretty much guarantee you will be amazed how much you love it!

It seemed to Caleb, the nature of human beings revolved around one empirical truth: For Caleb, it was Livvie. He recalled the press of her lips against his scars. She kisses my scars and I create new ones for her. It was almost like the dark gave us permission to be ourselves, to put aside that he was my kidnapper, and the man responsible for all the terrible things that happened to me during the day.

But you have to understand, for all that Caleb did, he protected me too, in his own ways. It could have been so much worse for me without Caleb. T Bargon reviewed on on Sep.

You'll never read anything like it. I had an amazing sense of peace in the end. Caleb and Livvie will be a part of me for many, many years.

This was a thrilling conclusion to the duet.

I loved the psychology of the characters and their interaction with each other. I also liked the ending. Very well done. These books are not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth the read. Good job, Ms. Loved captive in the dark and this is a fantastic sequel.

The author delivered great characters as well as a believable ending. Kristina Plane reviewed on on Sep.

I thought this book was very good. I really enjoyed reading it. Natasha Knight reviewed on on Sep. I tried to stretch the reading of this book out but just finished it last night. I found the first book in this series Captive in the Dark a few weeks ago and was glad I didn't have to wait long for the 2nd book. Just like the first, this book did not disappoint. Livvie was strong, and even as she bent to survive her situation, she kept that toughness, even while falling in love with her kidnapper.

The characters were so well developed with pieces of information as you read, no info dump. The book was paced well and an exciting read. Plot was solid and the author kept the quality up throughout the book. So many times when you get a few chapters into a book especially one with erotic elements , it just falls apart. This one didn't with once again terrific plot and hot sex scenes more than in the first book. My only complaint would be that I'd love a third installment in this series I will stop rambling now but if you're not sure whether or not to buy it, do - you will not be disappointed.

Courtney McAnelly reviewed on on Sep. While reading both the first book and now the second book, Seduced in the Dark, I had to question my thoughts and what I felt about things and whether or not I needed to talk to a therapist. I enjoy books that make you feel so emotionally conflicted and this book does that. I'm happy how it ended and to even learn that there is possible another book connected to the series maybe coming out.

I look forward to reading more from CJ Roberts. Dark, but fantastic. The story is very compelling and will suck you in immediately. Kathy Womack reviewed on on Sep. CJ Roberts, what have you done to me?! SITD absolutely took my breath away I'm so completely blown away by this story, and it has my thoughts going in so many directions, I'm at a loss for words My Facebook friends are right there with me.

To be honest, I didn't think it could get any better than Captivated in the Dark I only thought CITD was "dark. So much was revealed of Caleb's life, his past, his experiences, and what made him the man he became. I was so confused at the feelings coming from me. The adventure on which the author took me, from the first book through the last, was truly captivating!

My heart broke for Caleb, and I found myself screaming so many times, "Nooooooo!!!! I was thinking to myself, where is CJ going with this?! No, it can't be!! But then, my reading hit that pivotal point, and I hated Caleb.

Follow the author

I was sickened by his actions and his treatment of Livvie. He was beyond cruel. But then I came to the point I pitied Caleb. So much of his experiences were on repeat visually in my mind.

My poor Caleb. I cried Can you feel the roller coaster I'm on? My stomach was literally clinching and heaving! Caleb had to survive so much How could I not pity him Once again, I am feeling as though I should pack my bags, skip any visits to a therapist, and just move right into the nearest mental institution. One minute, Caleb seems human and with a heart of gold The next minute, he is savage!

The hurt!! I loved hating Caleb, and I hated loving Caleb. Then, I just accepted loving Caleb and all of his screwed up, demented, disturbing, and sickening ways.

I chose to believe he really loves Livvie; I was convinced of that in the first book, and I'm still convinced in this one. He's always wanted her, lusted for her. But, does he win her? Is he redeemable? Does he get to keep her? Livvie had grown a lot in this book. I loved her in book 1, but she blew me away in book 2. Her inner strength and the depth of her understanding and compassion was absolutely beautiful.

Reward Yourself

Her uncrushable spirit was what got me through reading some of the darker scenes. She saw Caleb for who he really was. And she knew what she really felt for him. She saw the man behind the monster and was perceptive, forgiving and caring enough to understand why he was the way he was. I knew it was stupid.

Seduced in the Dark (Book 2, The Dark Duet)

I wanted him to know. I wanted him to know everything and I wanted it to mean something to him. I wanted him to choose me and accept me. I wanted him to leave everything behind and love me.

He was cruel, but yet kind; brutal, and yet caring… and his journey was him finding out which side of him was more dominant — the man inside, or the monster he showed the world? Once upon a time, he may have been… normal. Before he had been stolen, before the beatings and the rapes and the killing — he could have been something different than what he was. There were times I hated him, utterly and completely, with every fiber of my being. His journey in this book was heart breaking as he struggled between being true to his heart and being true to the intense loyalty he felt for the man that raised him.

Its hard because you find yourself genuinely, honestly, full-heartedly sympathizing with someone involved in human trafficking and murder. But at the same time, you have to consider that he too was violated, for years. It was what he grew up with and the only world he knew.Caleb was being manipulated so he did things that frustrated me a lot. Did I really just read that?! He's always wanted her, lusted for her.

It seduced me and it sickened me. I fully credit Mrs. Olivia and Caleb were scorchingly hot in this book! On the other hand I love this book because it delievers with its own way a few messages.
